Our inspiration

It all begins after a bike accident...

Once during a family dinner, one family member shared about his bike accident. He broke his leg and went through a surgery. After that surgery, he struggled to move. Each time he tried, he experienced intense pain in his leg.

We went through more research...

45% patients are immobile after surgeries. They are mainly orthopedic, abdominal, ICU, and elderly patients. In 1200 immobile patients, 15% of them experiences secondary damages.

Therefore we look for a solution that combines both

Curawave, Ocean wave comfort mattress

A mattress composed of 360+ silicone units that can automatically move patients smoothly from operating table to their beds.

How does it works

Our product is composed of 360 of these small units

Each unit is composed of a silica base and inflation layer, a confining layer and protective coatings on it. The protective coatings provide anti-infections for a medical environment.

Moving Principle

After inflation, the stretching degree of the restriction layer is smaller than that of the expansion layer, so the silicone will deflect to 1 side. Therefore it can move the object to 1 side.

As demonstrated in this video, the strectching degree of the restriction layer and expansion layer are important parameters of our product.

Therefore we need to carefully test and adjust the silicon and other materials like medical gauze in order to satisfy the requirements for our mattress.

1. Mold 3D modeling

These are 2 bases, both top and bottom, and a inner core of 1 silicon unit.

2. Producing the first unit and testing

We use 3D printing to create our mold for the unit. Then, We purchased silicone of different thicknesses to pour according to the mold

We tried thickness of 40A/B, 30A/B, 10A/B and 0A/B. We finally select 30A/B because of its strectching degree and the overall tensile strength of the model.

3. The Control and Programming

The Control

We use solenoid valves to control the in and out of the air flow from the pump to the silicone units.

The Programming

We use Arduino to program the open and close of these solenoid valves and the air pump. 

4. Mass production of models

This is the overall combining process of 4 units.

A 1 × 4 model was produced, as shown in the photo.
Through this, the air from the main air pump is divided into four parts, and each group is individually controlled by a solenoid valve.
After producing these models, these models will combine with the air pump and solenoid valves for the overall process testings.

Overall demonstration

After 1 group is inflated, because of the mechanism said before, it will deflect to 1 side. Then the 1 group with deflate and the another group inflate and repeat the process. After a period of half a minute, the object can be moved about 30cm.
We will adjust the power of the mattress for different patients.

What's new

competitor analysis

In order to determine the gap in this market, we've done the competitive analysis in this market. Our main competitors are over seas, and there are little competitors in China.
Compare to our product, our main competitors appear with only likeable structures and cannot serves the same functions, and they involves problems like high price and inconvenient to use and sanitize. And they are mainly fragile with un-eco friendly materials.

Our innovations involve reducing reliance on human power, massage function, a price advantage, anti-infection and easy to clean.We will implement AI to create a wound image and calculate the path and force needed. AI will also calculate the appropriate power of the mattress by examining the height, width and weight of the patient.
